Q: What is Jook?
A: Jook is a music sharing device. Portable media players can now act like personal radio stations, allowing you to share music with people in the vicinity, in real-time, wirelessly.
Jook is a service. Want to find other fans of Explosions in the Sky? Find out which songs are most popular in your city? Jook is also a web service, and allows you to do that and more. And with Jook's privacy settings, you get to choose how much or how little information you share with the world.
Jook is a standard. Jook Inc. is partnering with 3rd-party manufacturers for Jook integration into earphones and other products. Stay tuned for product announcements by subscribing to our mailing list at the bottom of this page.
Jook is making music a social experience again.
Q: How does the Jook device work?
A: The Jook device is attached to your media player (like an iPod), and when its "off", you listen to your music normally through your earphones. We call this the "me" mode.
Click the button once on the Jook pill, and the button will now turn red. The music that you're listening to will now be broadcast to other people with Jook devices for them to tune in using their own earphones. We call this the "us" mode.
Press the button again on the Jook pill, and you can now listen in on the music that the people around you are sharing using Jook. We call this the "u" mode.
Q: Can I download songs that I listened through Jook?
A: We'll be providing iTunes music store links for the songs you've listened to for purchase, on your profile page at the Jook website, or directly on your media player (if supported). However, you would not be able to download music from Jook broadcasters directly to your media player.
Q: When will it be available?
A: We're expecting our first batch of Jook devices to hit the streets by Spring 2010, and general availability by Summer 2010.
Q: Which media players would be supported?
A: We're working hard to support all major brands and models. At launch, we'll be targeting these Apple music players:
- iPhone
- iPod touch
- iPod nano
- iPod classic (3rd generation (2003) onwards)
- iPod mini
Q: How will I find other people with Jook devices to share music with?
A: 1. Look around! We've designed (and are still refining the design of) the Jook pill to have it look prominent yet still remaining portable, so you'll easily spot other Jook users in the train cabin, at the cafe or in the library.
2. Use the Jook Map (on Internet-enabled media players or on the Jook website) to locate where Jook users in "us" mode are located.
Q: What are some of the ways I can use Jook?
A: Be a mobile DJ, and play your favorite music to other commuters in the train. Find out who's tuning into your music and exchange contacts with the people you found interesting.
Out on your favorite route with your running buddy? Share the same music, and if you're using the Nike + iPod Sports Kit, both of you can share workout messages from the iPod too.
Ever tried sharing your favorite podcast or music with your friend in the subway, and then, only one of you gets a seat? With Jook, there would be no more battles with earphone cables, just listening pleasure.
And that's just a few ideas. Tell us how you would use Jook!
Q: How do I find out more about who's listening to me and who i'm listening to?
A: For media players that allow 3rd-party apps to be installed (e.g., iPhone and iPod touch), you can launch our special app, and you can see immediately the list of listeners or broadcasters.
For other media players (e.g., iPod nano, iPod classic), you'll be able to find out who you've been listening to when you sync your Jook device onto your Mac or Windows personal computer.
Q: What can I share and see in Jook profiles?
A: At minimum, your Jook screen name, avatar (profile picture) and title/album/artist of the song you're broadcasting or listening to will always be available. If the privacy set
Q: How far away can I tune in from other Jook devices?
A: About 10 yards (9.1 meters). Final range may vary as we conduct more tests and refinements in our secret lab.
Q: How many listeners can connect to one Jook device broadcasting in "us" mode?
A: There's no limit to the number of listeners, as long as they're in range.
Q: How do I find out more and keep up with latest developments?
A: Sign up for our mailing list at the bottom of this page or follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/jookhq
Technical
Q: Do I need a separate battery for my Jook?
A: Jook draws a minimal amount of power from your media player and will not require a separate battery.
Q: How's the sound quality?
A: The sound quality is completely lossless. This means that if the broadcasting Jook device has a CD quality track, you'll hear it in CD quality too!
Q: Do I need to install anything on my media player to make Jook work?
A: Jook can work without having anything installed on your media player, but for the more advanced functions (e.g., maps, song ratings, etc), an application program would need to be installed on the media player.
Q: What's the latency/lag between the time the broadcaster plays the song, and when I hear it?
A: The latency for Jook audio streams is 12ms, practically instantaneous. In contrast, auditory reaction times in humans is between 140-160ms.
